I have absolutely zero experience in running a business, but I have got my head on my shoulders. I left school and worked for a year as a waitress in a top London restaurant, I got to see a fair bit of the business side of things and I’m great with people. If I’m passionate about something I can be very driven. I’ve just spent the last 6 months living independently in Egypt and doing my PADI Divemaster course.
I’ve recently had an idea. The place where I live out here is a small but very colourful, lively coastal town. It’s touristed but it’s not completely ruined by it. Just about the perfect balance. All kinds of activities and sports take place here; windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, quad biking, wakeboarding, rock climbing, free diving, etc. I’ve noticed that there’s a niche here. No one’s ever packaged these things all together and served them up on one exhilaratingly tempting plate. The divers don’t really mix with the windsurfers, half of the people out here probably don’t even know about things like the rock climbing because it’s so poorly publicised. I want to take everything this town has to offer and put it all together in customisable ‘package holidays’ for people wanting to have a fun, active time and meet like-minded, fun-loving people. You could pick and choose what you wanted to do and then at the end of the day there’d be a group event like a meal out or a barbecue. It’d be a great bonding experience and give people a chance to step outside of the box and try things they’ve never given a go before. I think this idea could really work, and as my dad said the ‘overheads’ really wouldn’t have to be massive, all it really needs to begin with is a website and an office. I’m getting very intrigued by this whole idea and really want to pull it off. What do you guys think? Do you like the idea? How would I even go about all of this? Any advice really appreciated.

I am currently going to a private university and soon will be graduating with a double major in Business and Economics. I am also involved in two student organizations (Economics Association & Accounting Association). My only concerns are that I have a small burn scar on my hand from cooking which some people associate with gang relations especially because I am Hispanic, but I am not gang affiliated at all. I also only have G.E.D. due to family adversity during high school.
Do I have any chance for success or am I destined to fail via corporate politics?
Also, should I inform my prospective employers about the scar and my G.E.D during the interview?
Will honesty “be on my side”?

I’m thinking of starting an online biz which focuses on two main themes – music and history.
Do u think this is considered a niche biz idea? How marketable or profitable and well-received would this idea alone be?

A friend and I once debated the merits of opening a specialist wool shop, which sells hand-knitted clothing and balls of wool – the twist being is that the shop is aimed at adults. The items of clothing would be revealing and quite sexualised – hence the shop name, ‘Sexu-Wool™’ – and there would by quite artistic displays of erotic imagery made, Art Attack style, from wool collages on the walls and ceiling. The shop would be dimly lit in a red afterglow, and the shop staff would sport these skimpy woolen outfits.
I think, as a niche business, it would take off like a rocket. What do you think?
Failing that, I plan on opening another clothing shop, where Muslims can get robes, outfits and accessories on the go, served quickly and efficiently – Burqa King™.
Am I Dragon’s Den material or what?

My company currently only has a very basic online retail website, and we would like to redevelop this to boost our online sales. We are a small-mid sized re-distributor for various manufacturers, and currently handle the vast majority of our orders via phone/fax.
We need a customizable Ecommerce platform that will allow us to create a very functional website with a lot of personalization for the users . We are in a unique niche, and our users require some non-standard features & ordering processes that we would need built into the site.
I am looking into various solutions. Ideally, we would like a system that offers CRM, accounting, inventory, POS integration, and other enterprise management tools.
I’ved looked into Oracle, but frankly, it all confuses the hell out of me. They offer so many products/solutions, i’m not sure if this is even what we need. Do they offer an ecommerce platform, or how would it be integrated into a website?
As a redistributor we only currently carry a small inventory of product. Generally we receive orders, put in an order to the manufacturer, receive the product, and then ship it almost immediately. However, as our online business grows, eventually we’ll expand our inventory to hold products we find are most desired through sales analysis/metrics.
Do you have any suggestions on good enterprise software for us? Have you had any bad experience? Is Oracle the way to go? Where can I find a good developer/IT guy that would aid in the implementation of this?
