Approaching Random People On Facebook For Small Business?

I have a e-commerce site and I would like to expand my social media campaigns.
With twitter, I find it relatively easy – it’s casual, a lot of random people talk to other random people, and each message is so transitory that I feel fine approaching people. (Not ‘selling’ per se, but saying hi or something)
With facebook, I feel like a spammer when I approach a stranger, even when he/she is obviously interested in my niche. I hate cold calling and I feel like one of those cold callers when I approach unknown people on facebook.
It’s especially hard because we’re not a big company known by everybody, and I also don’t have a huge budget with which I can run continuous facebook ads and/or ‘like us and get free stuff’ campaigns.
So my question is: how do people approach potential customers on facebook without being a spammer or spending too much money on it?
Is there a smart way to manage your facebook ad budget?
It is a very general question indeed, but any helpful comments would be appreciated.

So What If Romney Failed?

Lately, Republican candidates are taking shots at Mitt Romney because in his private equity life he had some failures. Democrats have made no secret that they are going to go after Romney because in his private equity life, he had to shut down some unprofitable plants to save businesses. Heaven forbid, other businesses he invested in went belly up. I am not here to defend or advocate for any particular candidate, but I do think that Americans need a much better perspective on failure.
Why are we so hard on failure?
One of the things the start up community does is embrace failure. When a company goes under, you learn from it. I have invested after tax dollars that were hard to earn into many companies, and not all of them have worked out. One went belly up. One is marginal, one is on fumes, and the rest are operating, but like any company they have challenges. I have had some exits too. But, even those had many twists and turns along the way and the company could have gone under.
Being in business isn’t easy. It’s risky. If it were easy, we’d all leave our cushy government and corporate jobs and go on our own and start entrepreneurial companies. But, statistics show that fewer than 30% of all start up businesses make it ten years. Starting a business isn’t rocket science, but it’s a heckuva lot tougher. But, encouraging people to take that risk leads to gigantic gains for our entire society.
To give you a little perspective, you need to know what Romney engaged in. He was in what is called Private Equity (PE). Most people confuse Private Equity with Venture Capital (VC). Venture invests in newer companies that have a new technology. Private Equity invests in an existing company that has been operating and reinvents that company. Usually, PE firms use a lot of leverage (debt), to generate returns. Extra leverage on the balance sheet magnifies the rate of return if the company can afford the debt load. If the company can’t afford it, it either restructures again or goes bankrupt. The reason it’s called Private Equity is that the money for the fund comes from private sources, not government sources. The companies that the PE firm buy and run are not listed on public markets, but closely held. The big payoff for PE comes when they spin the companies back out into the open market through an IPO or acquisition. Private Equity firms take risk.

Best International Business Opportunity: A) Import/export Or B) Marketing Niche Vacation Packages?

I am an American living in Stuttgart, Germany in the very early stages of considering business opportunities that I can work not only while I live here for the next few years, but one where I can continue to work the business when I move back to the states (Southern California). The two business opportunities listed in my title are the broad areas that most interest me.
With both areas I am more interested in the ‘representation’ of niche manufacturer products or travel packages.
My background is in sales and marketing (Sports and Media). While I currently teach Business English at German companies, unfortunately I’m still not fluent in German or any other language so this concerns me although in most cases I can have a native speaker handle communication translations.
So, I’m throwing it out there just to see what some of your thoughts are – the pros and cons, your experiences, etc.
Thanks in advance!

When he was in business he did everything solely in his garage at his home & made a comfortable living from it. He ceased in business due to ill health and a marraige breakdown but was on the brink of having large interest by an american cleaning company..not mentioning no names…I am still young at 29 but i am a hard worker and committed to everything i do. I just dont know how to start having little money to start it up again can anyone give me good advise on how to go about things ?
