Atheists: I’ve Got A Serious Problem With You And Want You To Answer Me.?

Alright, so the title is just a joke. It is true and I do have a serious and problem and want you to answer me but I thought maybe it would filter out the silly little creationists and the atheists.
Just in case you didn’t know, I’m an atheist. Just to make it clear.
I’m rather new to atheism. I used to believe in God but I decided it was obsolete and didn’t make sense. Now, it seems that my mother cries all the time about the fact that I’m apparently “going to hell.” My friends don’t like the idea of it and I have no atheist friends that I can relate with. I live in North Carolina and there is a very big Christian influence and I have to deal with my best friend telling me all the time,”You know being an atheist doesn’t make sense right? I mean, it is just stupid. You just want to do what you want to do and not want to be wrong.” He told me that over the phone today while my mother screamed at me and told me simultaneously,”You are going to hell and you know that the Bible is the only truth and the only way. I don’t care what you say. You will be a Christian again and believe the RIGHT way.”
I was so embarrassed and didn’t know how to handle it so I said,”Just because you believe what you’re told from some dusty book and the idea of hell was probably borrowed from other cultures considering others having the same idea and you just can’t face the fact of dying and no after-life.” She said to that,”No, they borrowed the idea from us.” I told her,”Mama, you are a woman of European descent and you aren’t even affiliated with the ancient Jewish people other than copying their beliefs in a remote way. They didn’t borrow nothing from you.”
I hear stuff like this daily. How do I stop having to hear how I am going to die in hell and that Jesus loves me all at the same time? I cannot stand having to hear it. What do I do? My mother made me go to church last Sunday and it is just driving me crazy. Please, I need advice. Thanks for your time.

Just be firm in your beliefs, you don’t have to follow the flock just because a sheep said it’s wrong not to believe what they do.

  2. Ali says:

Out of curiosity, how old are you? If you are over 18 you can always move away because I doubt that they will stop with all the religious nonsense. But if you are younger than 18, then you’ll have to endure it. I would look and see if there are any atheists groups in your area where you can get support.

  3. Gym rat says:

just tell them, why believe is something made up by uneducated people, who also believed the earth was flat….

  7. Shoes Too A Wish within a Wish says:

I would just tell her “If you love me, you’ll accept me the way I am. Moms are supposed to let their children be themselves, because there are so many pressures from my piers toact in a way I don’t want to all the time. Mom, you’re making me depressed!”
Because I’m manipulative, and my own mother never thought into it.

  8. Humanity has no hope says:

Ouch. I came out to my friends and they were fine (i come to a christian school). Just ignore them, they are not worth your time. They are filth, they are bigots. She says the bible is truth, tell her to prove it before she rambles her mouth.
@Stephasaurus, OMG im so sorry for thumbing you down, my hand twitched and it clicked thumbs down. 🙁

  9. CC says:

As long as you live under your parent’s roof, you do as they say. Go to church.
However, they can never tell you how to think or believe.
If you are tired of having to hear it all the time, I suggest you find a way to become independent (emancipation) and move out.

  10. saucemas says:

um i didnt read it all. i was too a christian and went through it. it doesnt stop. ever. atheism isnt a religion. you dont convert to it. you are just finally not believing in santa.
    edit— even better!!!
tell her that you need to figure it out on your own
    Luke 15:7
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent

  11. Witch says:

Wait it out for at least three months. If your situation doesn’t improve and you are planning on living with your family for more than a year, pretend to be a Christian again.

  12. Brittany says:

Unfortunately, especially in über-Christian households, it’s hard to get away from this kind of judgement. My mom is hardcore religious, my brother is an atheist, and my sister and I don’t really care one way or the other. Our mom hates it, but she’s living her life the way she wants, and so are we. It’s not her decision.

  13. Darling, let's be adventurers says:

Honestly, you can’t do anything about it. People will always judge you on it. Especially with you living where you do… If you truly believe that there is no God, then you just have to ignore them. That is all you and all of us can do.
There will always be someone trying to convert you or telling you are going to Hell. That’s life.

  14. Annie says:

ROFL…. I guess there is no one able to answer….. you address it to atheist and then say , *To filter out the silly creationist and atheist*….. How old are you ?? 12 or so ???
Child of God – X atheist

  15. dianalee says:

Jacob, there’s an old saying “don’t wear your heart on your sleeve,” well the same goes for your feelings toward religion. Stop talking about your beliefs, read, and gather facts, your opinions don’t have to be shared.
Why people want to shout about ‘their’ religion or lack of religion is a mystery to me. Just keep your feelings to yourself, educate yourself and someday when you don’t live at home you’ll be able to express how you feel.

  16. Muhammad Body of Dog says:

It sounds as if your whole family is dysfunctional. Your symptom just happens to be an adolescent belief in atheism.

  17. Karen says:

Maybe you could at least look into the evidence for it before throwing the whole thing out. I’ve looked at a lot of religions and the only one that has evidence for it (and mounds of it) is Christianity.
Obviously having them try to force you into believing something is not going to help you in any way.
It is an important thing however – if God is real, than we should find out before we die. If you look at both sides of the argument you’ll at least be making an informed decision, and have a reason for believing instead of just having it forced on you.

  18. Lucaiie says:

You should tell them that if they don’t respect your beliefs, you are more than willing to sever your ties with them, as a threat.
As for the “going to hell” thing, well, as an atheist myself, I don’t believe in hell, so I don’t really believe I’ll be going down there.
You should tell your mom that you refuse to talk to her until she calms down and is willing to have a normal, civilized conversation with you. And if it really bothers you so much, you should ask them to prove to you that God exists without the use of the Bible.

  19. Dcsimo says:

Unfortunately you may not stop hearing this for a long time, especially since you live in a community with a lot of Christians. What you can do to at least make yourself more informed is to join an atheist group around your areas or even just online. There are plenty of great resources available to you and they will give you the information you need to be sure of what you believe in. It’s not likely that this will change other people’s opinions but you will gain the benefit of being firm in what you believe in. Honestly I applaud the fact that you have decided to stand up for what you believe in.
