Furries: Do You Think The Furry Fandom Is A Very Misunderstood Culture?

I’m a furry and I know it’s not all about jacking off to porn. I’m actually a scalie though, but I love furries.

To answer your question, YES: The Furry fandom is definitely a very misunderstood fandom. When people think about furries, they think about men, wearing colorful dog suits and having orgies. Stereotypical stuff. Oh and then the porn. However, a majority of them, or at least, what the culture is about is finding their inner selves and how they feel right. You feel you should of been a happy Dingo? You find that you find a lot more friends who appreciate your love for Dingos and affiliating yourself with them? You feel right at home and its where you stay. Its lifestyle.
Personally, I love reptiles. I’ve affiliated myself to Western dragons and it is now my avatar of how I’d like to be seen as in the scalie community. I don’t exactly feel like it is a lifestyle though to be honest. It is just something I enjoy. Also I do make fun of Furries a lot because it is just how some scalies like to have this Vampire vs Werewolf war against each other, but they are okay.

Furries do seem to be misunderstood by a large segment of the population. For one thing, there seem to be a lot of people who buy into the largely inaccurate stereotypes that furry is a sexual fetish and that furries like to engage in fursuit sex orgies. Unfortunately there are also those on the Internet who seem to enjoy stirring up drama by perpetuating these stereotypes, even though they likely know better.
There’s a saying that if you ask 10 furries what furry is, you’ll get 20 different answers. For some it includes connecting with a particular inner self in the manner Elio describes in his reply, but for others, they simply enjoy the movies, stories, artwork, costumes, and so forth. Some take it to a lifestyle or spiritual level while to others it’s just a hobby or interest. Some furries have no interest at all in the adult works or aspects of the fandom.

Okay, as I start writing this you’ve had no replies yet, so here goes….
I’m a goth, and a part of that goes hand in hand with the fetish scene, so I’ve been to events with a furry presence. Now, I’m no furry, it does nothing for me, but I guess it’s no different to my own cosplay/fetish wear. Okay so as a goth I’ve a thing for PVC and rubber, but with a slant towards looking good and looking sexy, not a gimp! So I do understand where you are coming from in saying these things are not just about porn!
Hope you get a few better answers than mine to this…
