I wasn’t sure what you meant by Nemo’s “niche” so I looked it up here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecological_…
Nemo was a lucky, little fish who’s egg managed to escape being eaten by a barracuda. His 400+ siblings in his parent’s clutch were not so lucky. Nemo was maimed (with an abnormally small right fin) but he survived. Ecologically, he proved that what is important to a species is not only survival but survival of the fit ENOUGH, i.e., fit enough to live and, one day, reproduce.
“Survival of the fit enough” is also emphasized by the fact that while direct competition has been observed between individuals, populations and species, there is little evidence that competition has been the driving force in the evolution of large groups. For example, between amphibians, reptiles and mammals; rather these animals have evolved by expanding into empty ecological niches.[8]”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival_of…
