It’s basically the same thing as Windows 7. The start menu was replaced with the start screen. There are a lot of things about it that seem complicated initially but that you’ll pick up over time.
Anyone claiming it’s a disaster is being overly dramatic. It’s super easy to plug in a replacement start menu and ignore the start screen completely.

Windows 8 is a HUGE failure. While it does have a desktop as some claim. It also has so many others things that makes it miserable to use. What took 2 clicks to get done in Windows 7, you have to click 4 or 5 times to get the same thing done in 8. Between its charm bars and hot corners you will go crazy trying to navigate thru it. Do not let people tell you its the same as Windows 7. Sadly M$ decided it wanted to break into the mobile market so they thought that the first thing to do is destroy their desktop market.

Windows 8 is just terrible it was made for tablets and not desktops and is even more virus prone than 7 so virus software company’s can make money.
Windows 7 is a bit better and has a lot more compatibility but windows 8 many people refuse to use or even publish applications for. Minecraft for example will never be on windows 8
Desktop looks the same, browsers look the same, but people still complain about no start menu because they can’t handle change.
Windows 8 is a complete horror.
