How To Get A Fantasy Book Published?

Does anyone have any advice on how to get a Fantasy book published? I have finished my first draft and am going currently going through the editing process so am still a way off. However, I am starting to think about how to go to the next step once this is done.
Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.
I have had a look around and there seem to be mixed opinions. Some people say self publish, others say never ever pay to get your book published. Others suggested getting an agent or go to an independent editor first. Other recommendations are to send your details to a publishing house etc.
I know Fantasy/Sci Fi is a niche so i cannot send my work to any publisher but I would like some direction on what to do once i am happy with my story to give it the best chance of getting published.
This is my first novel (hopefully) so I don’t have much capital to spend loads and loads but I can try and find some. I just need to know it is worth it before i invest in any 3rd parties.
Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Thinker says:

Self-publishing doesn’t lead to success. You need to try traditional publishers. Research agents who represent that kind of work and then look at who published books similar to the work you’ve got. Contact either an agent or a publisher.
    Essentially, do your homework.

Self-publishing doesn’t have to involve giving anyone money to print your book. I self-published with Amazon’s KDP, Smashwords, Lulu and CreateSpace, and I didn’t give them a penny.
Ultimately, this is a question you have to answer for yourself. The publishing industry is going through a lot of changes now, and there’s no longer a single right answer to the question “how do I get published?” (not that there ever was, really). Each approach to publishing has its advantages and disadvantages. What I see as a disadvantage might not be a problem to you.
