Help – Keyword Vs Experience?

Hi guys,
I discovered internet marketing about 3 months ago and have already got 2 small sites running but still learning the ropes.
I just have a question that I am stuck with, so I was hoping that someone might be able to help.
My recent experience and passion has been with bringing a product to market (which I managed to do successfully) and I’d like to start a blog on that – not claiming to be an expert but sharing my experiences and getting experts in to interview.
The problem is I have had trouble finding good ‘money’ keywords based on Pat Flynn’s Keyword research webinar criteria – the SEO competition looks fairly high and traffic ok-low. Looking at the competition, I am confident I can provide a better authoritative site than most of them but without those money keywords would I just be wasting my time?
I’d love to capitalize on the experience I have had over the last few years and share the lessons I’ve learned with others but obviously do not want to ignore all the advice i’ve been reading on the importance of picking good keywords.
Should I go with my passion/experience and expertise or should I scrap this idea as being too risky (not enough traffic/too much competition) and focus on a different niche all together?
Any advice you could give would be much appreciated – and Thank you!!

There are still many many more options than this. You do not need to have a lot of traffic. Just a little will do and then it builds. If you want more try things like create a product, build a product, invent a product, etc. There are a ton of ways to do it.
However, more important is when Pat Flynn talks about long tail keywords. I am not sure the page, but he does talk about it in regards to his Security Guard training site. Look at how many different keywords he gets traffic from.
I once with a client took their main keyword and then their next 10 minor keywords. The total traffic from the 10 far exceeded the traffic from the main keyword. When you have 300 different terms, the main keyword may actually bring in less then 10% of your traffic.
So the question is how do you get found for 300 keywords? Lots of quality content. I read somewhere that about 50% of all the searches in Google are completely unique and will never be searched for again. 50% may not be the exact right number, I can not remember now, but it is way up there. So if all else fails, right content for this group of unique searches. Again this means lots of quality content.

    Hi David,
There is no truth to the assumption that you need a big list and lots of traffic to make money. It all depends on your product, your target audience, and whether your product solves a problem for that audience.
People usually buy things to get a ‘shortcut’ to solving a problem. You don’t say what your product is, but let’s assume it’s a weight loss pill (a VERY common product!). The thing is, your pill only works for vegetarians over the age of 30, under 3 feet tall. That’s not a huge audience, but it *is* a very defined (targeted) audience. And it is a product that your audience would happily pay some money for to get.
So you do some testing, and you find that the maximum your audience will pay is $10, but the product costs you $8 to manufacturer. Small audience, low profit margin.
But, don’t see you product as the ONLY thing you can offer your customers. See it as the first step in a ‘marketing funnel’ – a process where you introduce higher priced products to deliver faster, more encompassing solutions to their problems.
Sure you make $2 on the product – enough to pay your hosting costs for that week – but you now have a list of buyers. The next steps are to email them some valuable support information for free, send them the occasional affiliate offer (money for you), then tell them about your new DVD products that describe diets/exercise/hypnotherapies that make their pills work even faster. And they cost just $37 each.
You can go on building that funnel. The key is to really think about all the related information and products that you could package onto additional offers, and provide that along with regular high-quality content. Your happy customers (get their success stories and testimonials!) will also happily recommend your products to their friends, and on it goes.
Stay focused on your passion for the product and providing value to your customers. The money will follow in abundance.

The truth is the search engine Use the Google keyword tool to see what prospects in your industry are looking for and then use a simple Google search to see how many results there for that search. The keyword tool will determine if there is an audience for what you are targeting in your online SEO marketing and the Google search will give you the exact amount of competition there is already out on the internet now.
