Are Air China And China Southern The Same Thing?

I recently booked a flight to China from the US through Orbitz. I was looking at my record number and it lists a record locator for Air China, when my flight itinerary says that I am flying China Southern. Anyone know if I got screwed over, or if they are affiliated?

The two airlines aren’t affiliated though 3rd party sites are known to mix and match airlines to get you a good deal. Not knowing your itinerary, it’s hard to tell who to check in with.

No, your additional details do not help – you were asked to provide your itinerary (airports, times) for a straightforward answer. Your information seems to be strange though.
American Airlines is a member of oneworld; AirChina and ChinaSouthern are competitive airlines. AirChina is a member of Star Alliance whereas the latter is SkyTeam member. Both airlines do not have code share agreements with American Airlines.
Air China operates non-stop flights from L.A. or N.Y. or S.F. to Beijing whereas China Southern only operates non-stop flights out of L.A. to Guangzhou..
