   Sounds like a traveling Mass kit. Is the cross a crucifix or just a cross?
   It could also be a Sacrament of the Sick kit, many people used to have them in their homes so that if someone fell sick, the priest only had to bring the Eucharist and the annointing oil as the house already had the rest.
   My mother found one recently, had the same things inside, but it was stored in a wooden cross, so remove the lid and you could set up the candles on the cross and have holy water.
   I’m leaning towards the Sacrament of the Sick kit.
