Is Teenage Romance Really So Necessary For Novels Nowadays?

I’m writing a novel, and I keep wondering, is this type of theme really so needed?
Teenage romance, s*x scenes, high school drama..teen stuff like. Now, I can hardy pick up a book from the bookstore that don’t possess these. It probably sells, but sometimes they can be too heartless and pointless. You can barely feel the emotions. The romance in my story isn’t the superficial type, they take time to develop and doesn’t feel the need to snog at every other page, they show their feelings through actions and encouragements not affiliated with s*x scenes and whatnot. It won’t probably attract lots, but it at least seems real. But why do they appear in nearly every new novel now?

not all books are like tha, i think it would be cool to have a book not like that! those books might sell but alot of people will like books without all that too!

  2. katrina says:

Because we (teen girls) are deprived of sex.

  3. jelly says:

    It’s a popular genre now.
Plus, in a way it can help teens learn about sex….like they really need to learn!
^^^^Btw, I meant that as sarcasm.
Sex is a high percent in today’s teen population!

I agree, but it sells. Many older woman i think buy books with teen romance because its reminiscent of their younger years.I think teens buy them cuz they want or cant wait to have those experiences themselves.i know it can be annoying, but its what sells.

    Two reasons.
    1. Sex sells. Period.
    2. It is becoming more and more the norm lately. Kids are having sex at younger and younger ages and there really isn’t so much romance or honest emotions involved these days.

not all boooks are like that…if you look closely, you’ll find a lot that aren’t romancehttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?…

Make this book and I shall buy it. No teenage romance… please. Character development, yes. Realistic situations, yes! No sex! No vampires.
If no one else buys it, I will buy all the copies you feel like printing. I am sick (I’ll say it again for emphasis, SICK!) of this stereotypical, dweeby teen novel craze. i want a book with some substance, not “OMG! Larry is sooo cute! Let’s get a motel room!” kind of crap. I need emotion, and thought. Sarcasm works well too.
The reason it’s popular? Teenagers are idiots. Yes, I said it. Not all of them, I know teens who are more mature than some elderly people I know. But in general, anything that is “In” teens will buy and learn to love. It matters not how utterly stupid it really is.

Needed for what exactly? If you’re writing for YOU then i don’t see how what everyone else is writing about matters.
I love reading/writing romance. It’s what interests me. You may love writing about sparkly vampires, or zombies. Who cares?
But Romance is what’s selling right now. I don’t think sex is a big part of it at all. Unless you’re in the adult section, there aren’t to many novels with sex scenes in it. That’s random. And I honestly think that the fantasy genre has overtaken the whole high school drama thing.

The idea that this teen-romance is supposed to be in book has been around since the fall of man.
I strongly suggest that you don’t let it get to you…keep it clean and don’t let the characters go past a side-hug or start kissing, because if you don’t want it to escalate into something you didn’t originally plan on putting into the book, do it the way that God and young Christian guys and girls would be proud of.
You have no idea how hard it is to find a book these days with a Godly perspecitve that readers can enjoy and appreciate. Satan has lied to the world that they need to incorporate sex and provocativeness into a book, or any other media, in order for anyone to want to read it. We are to be in the world and not of it.
Teen romance has done nothing to the teens in my town but hurt them and get girls pregnant that didn’t want it to happen. It also has crushed my best friend multiple times because she felt the need to be loved and wanted and feel like she was important, but each time she’s been emotionally interested in feeling like she needs a boyfriend and gets one, satan knocks her down again.
She can’t get any attention or acceptance from her family or mean girls at school unless she can be labeled as someone’s girlfriend.
I strongly believe that an emotional relationship with God is MUCH more important than anyhing on this earth.
