Love From God Or Plausible Explanation Of Natural Bond Or Survival Of Genes?

So, I was talking with my neighbor one day and we got onto the topic of religion/creation and he noticed I wasn’t affiliated with one. He went on to make an interesting point about love in animals and how it works and thus must be from God. His example was something like the following: (Assuming these are predatory animals; like lions, cheetahs, tigers, ect) When in the wild a male will mate with a female and when the offspring are there (I assume the male has departed, but he didn’t say that) if the male and female are both starving and the only food around is the feable babies the male would eat them in a second but the female would risk her life to save them even if she’s starving.
Okay, admittedly I sort of answered my own question here by writing this, but I’ll post it to make and interesting discussion. Both sides are open to (debate) answering because it’s not like my preference would stop anyone so I won’t bother asking. Thanks in advance.

The fact is, that’s just plain untrue. Female animals will totally eat their young when they’re starving or sick, or becasue the young are malformed. This happens all the time.
Additionally, the male often kills the young not out of hunger, but to cause the female to go into heat again so that they can reproduce again. Interesting, males will NOT do this to a female nursing their own young. This is an evolution-driven instinct.

The mother has a vested interest in the survival of her offspring. Even so, the father does not quite “depart” as he, too, has a vested interest in perpetrating his own genes. That is why the big cats form packs centered around a male. However, another male has no such compunction and will, in fact, kill the offspring in order to force the female back into heat in an attempt to get her pregnant with his offspring.
That is the nature of the “propagating the species” from an individual perspective – more of his own kids, more of a chance of ensuring that his genes survive.
