Does Reading Other People’s Poetry And Being Influenced By Them Take Away From Your Own Style?

Like, say I have a specific, unique style, or way of looking at things, but i’m not necessarily amazing. So I read more poetry, and then i’m influenced by them, and maybe I get better, but that unique style is no longer there. Can you be influenced without your style being diffused?

    Hi,
Um I am pretty much a niche poet. Does that mean I have “A Style”? I’m not sure, and I pretty much know that my passion for poetry has been influenced and inspired by even as little as a single word from others. I see nothing wrong with that, and I will credit anyone for the nudge they may give me.
There are no more original thoughts (my opinion) but different ways to express thoughts can be found and presented. If I worried about being diffused, I’d likely lose what I so enjoy about poetry.

Are you asking if it’s wrong to be influenced by other people? What do you think? Is there something unique about your influences or is there something unique about your style or could it be both? Style is just a word anyway. Not that there’s anything wrong with words.

The style you already have was formed by influences. Remember mother goose? Dr. Seuss? Ever attended a religious service and sung a hymn? Did Grandma have a certain way of talking?
Don’t let it worry you. Ingredients can’t ruin a smart cookie.

    Influence is not necessarily glue.

Read good poetry – the more you read the better your own style will become. I wouldn’t worry about being unique.
