Can People Just Be Bad At Writing Fictional Stories?

Is being a good fiction writer like being a good singer? Like you’re either born with crazy imagination or you’re not? I’m not a very good writer(I’ve been told so by good writers that this is so) and it just feels like I can’t wrap my head around how to write what I see on the paper and I can’t tell if what I’m writing sucks, and I’m bad at putting words in the right order so it doesn’t sound smooth.

There are many writers out there that will tell you that being a good fiction writer is something you are innately born with. Because some people do have more imagination, pay more attention to detail, and/ or are more creative in general. So yes, there are some people who are better story tellers than others.
Also saying you can’t see that your writing sucks but others seem to. There are two answers to this-1. Writing is very personal and many times you are too close to your work to see it in its entirety. If you fix your eyes on a single piece of sand, you won’t see the whole beach. 2. People have different preferences, there are many books out there that most don’t like however a niche group of people may really love the book. So your writing is never truly doomed. There may be another writer or publisher that connects with it and loves it.
To help with smooth writing and writing in general, you should avidly read. Reading great authors can give your writing a new voice and can inspire your style. This is my best advice.
I too am not necessarily a good fictional writer. I write mostly non-fiction prose and some poetry however do write some fictional stories that develop from non-fictional events. They always say to write what you know and within your boundaries. (thats why i stay away from trying to write long novels or fiction) Maybe learning your boundaries will help. Good Luck, dont quit and don’t let the negative comments affect you… some will never understand or follow your writing and thats ok.

Some people have a talent for it, yes, but you can also improve with practice. The best way is to get people to read your stories and point out the parts that don’t work and the parts that do, then take their advice. Or maybe you’d be better at writing poetry or nonfiction. The key is to keep writing and you’ll discover what feels right.

You may have natural talent, that’s entirely possible. You can also work to be good.
But it’s also possible to just not be good at things. I can’t sing for the life of me. I tried for years, never could.
So yes. It’s entirely possible that writing isn’t your thing. That doesn’t mean there isn’t something else that *is* your thing.

Writing is like everything else. Even with practice, someone just might not ever become good. That doesn’t mean you have to stop or hate whatever it is you’re bad at. I can’t draw for the life of me, but I love art, I love making little ugly doodles, and I definitely love paying people to draw for me.

No, and yes (and no). A singer usually has to train, a writer needs to practice and also train, reading is essential you have to see how writers use language. You can learn how to write well, the creative side you may need to work at.

  6. Smells like New Screen Names says:

No it isn’t necessarily a natural talent.
Like any talent, such as being a singer, it is improved with practice.
Almost anyone can sing, almost anyone can write.
