S&p Index And Dow Why Is The Money Less?

Why yesterday on july 17-12 when DOW was 0.62 and S&P was 0.74
and Today on July 18-12 when Dow was 0.81 and S&p was 0.67
How come I made less money is it because you have to factor in other stocks affiliated with vanguard stock which i have the 2045 VTIVX fund.

If you want an all-stock fund to follow the indices you are in the wrong Vanguard fund. You want VFIAX or similar. Your fund has 30% international stocks and 10% bonds.

WOW….. never invest in anything unless you totally understand it.
    A. Dividends, as you may in-vision them are not how your fund is made up. Although I’m not a major fan of your fund…. it’s certainly a better alternative to many other funds…. especially for someone that understands little on how these work. You cannot compare “dividends” in a growth fund, with many stocks that don’t earn dividends (which can be a very good thing).
    B. I’m not going into anymore…… you need a total lesson in Mutual Funds, Target Funds & stocks. I’m not prepared to do that. HOWEVER….. if your target fund is to 2045….. I think you should be in a fund earning almost no dividends…. since growth should be you goal. There are other no-load, low fee Mutual Fund companies that would be better suited for a younger person. In short… read some books….. this is too important to get ideas from strangers.
