In his day Lincoln was a member of the Republican Party, but that was before the parties flip-flopped and liberals were members of the Republican Party. In today’s world Lincoln would belong to the Democratic Party and the opposition would call him a far-left Liberal.

Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Republicans were always against slavery from the very creation of that party.
The reasons for Republican party being against slavery varied from religious principal and principal in the Declaration of Independence that all people are created equal by God to purely materialistic needs for free workers to boost industrial development of the United States. But who cares about the motives if the goal is noble.
