What Is ‘la Niche’ In English? (french)?

I don’t know what “la niche” means in English.
The word “niche” in English literally means a small space in a wall where you can put something in.
This can be used to form many imageries.
Here’s an example:
“We put the statue inside the left niche on the wall.”
“It is better for a business to choose a niche in the market and specialize in it, than to expand too quickly and not be specialized in any one industry.”
