You would need to use a host which allows sub domains. So if you register mydomain.com you would be able to use cars.mydomain.com, groceries.mydomain.com, fitness.mydomain.com

Yes, you just need create sub-domains.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 4 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.
You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st

I think you may benefit from an ‘unlimited’ hosting account – I have one with webhostingpad – you pay one hosting charge and you can add as many domains as you can buy to the one account – I have about six domains on mine at the moment – it’s easy to add new ones.
Of course there are two elements to the domain, the registration and the hosting – you will still have to pay registration for each domain unless you use sub-domains (which under the unlimited hosting package are free).
Note that your one ‘main’ domain would normally be registered with the hosting service – with the deal I have, I can add as many free subdomains to that as I want. Other domains are registered separately and the DNS settings adjusted to ‘point’ at the hosting server. If I wanted subdomains for these, I imagine I would have to arrange that with the registration company.
Below is a link to an article I wrote about the hosting and registration companies that I use…
    hope this helps
