How Do I Link A University-affiliated Gmail Account To My Smartphone?

I go to a school which uses a .edu email system that runs through Gmail. Is there a way I can use this account through my Gmail app on my android powered Ally? Or is there any app that will allow me to access it and receive notifications without going through the web browser?

On your pc/mac/linux computer, go to:
    Step 1)
GMail>Settings>Accounts and Imports>Import Mail and Contacts>Add your University certified email.
    Step 2)
GMail>Settings>Forwarding and POP/IMAP>POP Download. Select “Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on”. Enable IMAP, too.
Now, if you’re using a Blackberry, you should go to email set up and input your BB id to start and the rest is pretty simple. If it’s an Android based phone, then you won’t need to do any of the above procedure. In case, you aren’t getting your GMail synced, do as I said.
As for Windows Mobile, phones, you’ll have to go to email and set up an email account using Microsoft Exchange and the rest will take care of itself, courtesy of Step 1) and 2).
If you’re using any other smartphone, I think you should just go to the manufacturer’s website and find out the downloadable GMail app and you should set it up and you’ll be done, because Step 1) and 2) took care of the rest for you.
    Hope that helps!
PS, If you ever change your University email’s password, your GMail will stop syncing. So, make sure you make the respective changes on your GMail account, too!
    Cheers!
I didn’t read your question completely. You clearly mentioned Android and I gave you all the unnecessary stuff to read! Apologies.
