Affiliate Marketing Secrets

I’m in the process of creating a new social networking site for my local area that includes Missouri state,counties,cities,etc. I’m investigating some of Facebook’s and Google+’s features as well. Is there anything you feel Facebook,etc. is lacking or needs improvement on? I also want to have a change in the privacy as well as other user options to make site navigation easier for members. Please let me know your thoughts,and as the site grows we would love to expand to other states as well as eventually going nationwide. Also if you feel there is a certain niche of people we should target please let me know. Not necessarily a social network like Facebook, but a niche social network similar to goodreads.com and there would be a lot of downloading of pictures. I understand that I need a website designer, 1-4 good coders, & investors. Is this correct? I want it to be designed well, so I’m guessing this will cost me more.
Also, I need info for a business plan. How would I project yearly profits? I would include small ads on the site, but I have no idea how much that would bring in.
Also, should I ask this question on a “business” category instead of computer programming?
I’ve had a lot of Debbie-downers answer some of my questions, so please let’s pretend this is the best idea ever.

I know there is the official community sites affiliated with blizz but I am looking for something different, where users have profiles and add friends etc, not just forums.

Would it just be that all your friends are on your current SNS?
Would it be a new feature of the new SNS? If so, what would that feature be?
Would it be that the site is more of a niche community?
Etc…
