I asked my parents which political party they were affiliated with and they just looked at me and said they were independant but they acted kind of weird and nervous. Then my other family asked if they were Democrats and everyone went silent. Why are they acting so weird? I am also from Montana and Montana has mainly been Republican but when I asked if they were Republican they just acted weird?

You can’t expect everyone to have the same politics.
It is mostly because that subject is very likely to start an argument. That is why politics is one of those things you don’t talk about in a bar.
They may represent no political party thinking it does not matter or think they should not pull out political views in fear of a heated argument.
They might even represent a lesser known or (since you said most people in Montana are republicans) democrat party and don’t want to let anyone else know so that they won’t be singled out.
